Benefits of a Job and Task Analysis       Back to Service

What exactly is a Job and Task Analysis (JTA)?
A job analysis is a comprehensive examination of what people do how they do it and what results they achieve from performing the task. A job is comprised of numerous tasks. The analysis is performed to determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a task. These can then be used in training, performance evaluations, clarify responsibilities, and entry qualifications.

A task analysis is a detailed assessment of how each task is performed. A task is a series of actions or behaviors that accomplishes a goal. Typically a task analysis deals with observable steps.

A job and task analysis (JTA) is one aspect of the analysis phase of the instructional systems design systematic approach to training. Since the purpose is to produce a properly trained person, a job must be described in considerable detail to design and carry out effective training.

A job and task analysis is the foundation for all sound training programs. If this step is not done and done well, there will be no basis for development of effective, efficient instruction. Some of the outputs of a job and task analysis are:
  • A validated list of tasks that make up the particular job being analyzed.
  • Conditions under which each task must be performed, cues that initiate performance of the task, and standards to which each task must be performed.
  • Details of how each task is performed; that is, a listing of the work elements that make up each task.
  • The knowledge and skills required to perform the task.
A JTA is not only useful for training but can also used for establishing competency levels, job descriptions, and performance appraisals.
